could i ask you some questions about how the ids and the implants work?

everything i know about the ids i know secondhand, right?
so could you just tell me what's involved with setting them up?
and how unregistered ids put us in danger?
i know we can't open anything if we're not registered, and that the cops can see if we're not
but how does that work exactly?
i want to make sure i've got all the details right

It's not a simple matter of hooking you up to the network. I have to create false identities and lives for all of you. That means creating a lot of false documentation that will hold up under scrutiny if it comes to that. Even for an AI, that takes time.

The police have the ability to look up basic information on your ID with little more than a second glance. All they have to do is think about it, essentially. They're not scanning every single person they come across, necessarily, but if they have reason to be on high alert, or if they're suspicious, it takes no less than a second for them to do.

maybe that's what's got people confused
where most of us are from, ids are just a little piece of plastic with your name and address
i used to use a fake id in high school to sneak into bars
i bought it off some kid in my math class
but it sounds like you have to basically make up entire school and job histories and shit for us
i don't think a lot of us have really been thinking about that
do you have to have access to our implants the entire time you're working on the ids?

A piece of plastic? That's all? It doesn't seem very secure. I can see why people might think I'm dragging my feet and taking too long, if that's what you consider an "ID."

Yes, I do. It's why we insist that anyone who's fresh off the boat has to stay in the safehouse until I'm done.

Either way, it's looking like I'll need to step up and say something.

I wonder. I think most of all, you all enjoy arguing. I'm also missing some sort of unquantifiable human element that allows people to feel at ease around me. But we'll see.
